University police officers were notified around 7:30 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 28 about the threat, which was directed at a group of current students, the school announced just before noon Monday, Aug. 29.
Muhamad Diop was later identified as the former student who made the threat, authorities said. He was in New York City, but police had no idea where he was as of Monday morning.
Now, they're asking for the public's help in locating him.
"There is no evidence the individual is in the Bethlehem area; however, the investigation is active and ongoing," university police said.
In the meantime, the school will see an increased police and security presence on campus.
"All buildings have been made accessible ONLY by card swipe at this time until further notice," police said. "Otherwise, classes are being held and campus is operating as usual at this time."
University police is working with the Bethlehem Police Department, New York City Police Department, the FBI, and the U.S. Marshals.
Anyone with information is asked to contact the LUPD by calling (610) 758-4200.
